EHR Practice Management System Features – Electronic Claim Filing
This is the seventh article in my series on Cloud Based Practice Management Systems. For a more detailed discussion, as well as a five-stop process for selecting an EHR, check out the Guide to Choosing an EHR.
If you’ve been following this series, you’ve probably noticed I bring up time and money a lot. Specifically I point to how the various features of Cloud-Based EHR / Practice Management Systems have the potential to save practices a significant amount of both time and money. Nowhere does this have more potential than in the area of Electronic Insurance Claims Filing. When well integrated into the rest of a system, your insurance claims can be filed in a couple of clicks of a mouse. You read that correctly. I’m not talking about a CMS-1500 being printed out. I’m not talking about Superbills. I’m saying that, once you have finished your session and entered your note, in one or two clicks your insurance claim will already be on the way to the insurance company. Did I mention that, in most cases, when you submit claims electronically you get paid faster?
Through the magic of EHRs integrating with Clearinghouses, responses to claims (Electronic Remittance Advice, or ERAs) can be sent back into the EHR as well. This allows practices to potentially do away with paper EOBs entirely!

Health Information Exchanges (HIE) and How They May Affect Your Practice
Health Information Exchanges (HIE) are an initiative related to the Affordable Care Act and the HITECH Act. Their purpose is to ease the communication between the EHR/systems of various providers of health care, because the EHRs themselves are behind in doing so (i.e. interoperability).
